“What do you think that means?” Javier asks as we reach our tree.

I shrug. “I have no idea.”

Picking up the bottle, I drink half of it and pass it to my cousin. The air is chilly this morning, but I find it to be my favorite kind of air when it comes to jogging. It’s a refreshing breeze so you don’t melt under the sun, yet it’s not so cold that you see your own breath. Hence the joggers and tank top this morning.

“Did you ask Enzo about it?” he asks, sitting down on the grass.

“No, it’s just her dementia, surely…”

I join Javier but instead of sitting down, I lie down and outstretch my arms and legs, pretending to make a snow angel in the grass.

“Maybe…” he mutters out.

“What, you think there’s more to it?”

“You know what they say… Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence and three times is a pattern.”

“Shit, you’re right,” I admit, sitting upright and resting my elbows on my knees.

Javier’s eyes find my scarf-covered neck and he stares with his jaw clenching.

“I wanna kill that mother fucker.”

“He’s mine and you know it,” I tell him. “Soon…”

“We need to make a move, I think.”

I know we’re running out of time, with their due date slowly approaching and now Matt being back, we need to start acting. It hurts thinking about them moving away, knowing that I might never see them again. But I’ll do everything in my power to give them the life they deserve.

We both look at each other and I feel the back of my eyes burning. My best friend, my cousin, my brother… I wish him all the happiness in the world. It’s just a shame that it all comes without me in his life.

“I’m going to miss you,” he says, offering a sad smile.

“I’ll miss you too,” I smile back, the thought of them leaving tearing at my insides.

Standing up, we decide to walk back instead of jogging to the house. Javier throws his arm over my shoulder, pulling me close, and teases, “I’m going to miss telling you all about how good your best friend is in bed.”

I elbow him in the side and we both laugh out loud.

Stepping inside and closing the door behind us, we stop short when we hear a turned-up TV in the lounge. We both exchange looks and follow the reporter’s voice.

“The body was found by one of the employees this morning. The man is believed to be in his early thirties and has been stabbed multiple times in his chest. He was last seen last night inside the club with a woman who is believed to be of Latin nationality.”

Javier turns to me, crossing his arms over his chest, and waits.

“What?” I ask.

“Seriously?” he asks.

I shrug, “I did nothing that he didn’t deserve. He tried to rape someone.”

Javier drags his hand over his face, exhaling loudly and then we both jump when Molly sits up on the settee, turning around to us.

“I guess he deserved it then,” my best friend comments, lips pulled into a thin line.
